Diarist A23 Day07

First, some background. This past week, my husband and I have been moving into a different apartment here in our neighborhood. With our roommate moving out, and since out lease was up anyway, we took the opportunity to downsize a little bit. The new place is much nicer, and since our ex-roomie owned about 80% of the furniture in our old place, this was also an opportunity to get some of my own stuff. I really feel a lot more established and at-ease here. I’m sitting now at my new dining table, looking out the back patio at the snow, and a small bird. I am exhausted from the move, so today may not be so active.

6:30 AM – Bedroom – No alarms set, I let myself sleep as long as I like, which these days isn’t late. I roll over, check the phone, and see at least I slept until this side of 6am. Several messages pop up…a friend joined me overnight in getting into a small flame war on Facebook over certain political topics, against someone from Elwood neither she nor I know. This guy somehow brought illegal immigration into a conversation about Super Bowl parties.

About 7:00 AM – Bedroom – The hubby wakes up, and tells me about a dream he had where he was being forced to be a soap opera actor. He was despairing over being surrounded by so many untalented and ill-tempered actors.

7:45 AM – Kitchen – After laying around a bit more, waiting for the sun to come up a bit, I get up. I knew I wanted to dig my laptop out of whatever box I packed it into, and start typing this. It was easily-enough found, and I started coffee. But going into the fridge, I remember there is no creamer. Alas, I now have to leave the house. It is too early and cold for this, but black coffee simply will not do.

7:50 AM – Wal-mart at 8am on a weekend is probably as close to purgatory as one is likely to find today. Everyone, be they customer or staff, is there because some life-plan of theirs has gone awry (like my lack of half-and-half). I make as short a work of this trip as possible, and quickly enough I’m back home, getting ready to type this.

8:25 AM – Dining room – Of the new furniture we purchased for the place, it’s all going fine, except for the chair in the living room. One of the arms is really wobbly; we discovered this last night. It was delivered on Tuesday, but no one has really sat in it until just now because I had wall art piled on it. Now that I spent yesterday putting all of that stuff on the walls, the chair was only just now available to be sat in. Hopefully the furniture store has a repair or exchange option. At present I’m typing this while waiting for their 1-800-number to open for the day, if it does at all, since it’s Sunday. Music in my head: “Heat of the Moment” by Asia, from 1982. This was being played overhead in Wal-mart, and it’s still stuck in my head.

9:52 AM – Dining room – Called the furniture company, they say it can be repaired or replaced, and to set that up with the local store. They open at 11. All is still quiet and peaceful. The hubby fell back asleep. The cat is asleep on the sofa. I am chatting online with the same ex-coworker from earlier this morning. Another couple of birds and a squirrel are now here in the woods outside the patio door. I think we should get a feeder for out there. Trying to figure out if I care about the Super Bowl today to watch. Both remaining teams and fan bases are terrible. My team lost in the playoffs a couple weeks ago, so I don’t have a dog in the race. Will probably watch, hoping the most boring result possible (a Patriots victory) doesn’t happen. The Eagles’ quarterback did play for the university where I went to grad school, so I think I will play that angle. Music on Youtube: The Sea and Cake – the “Nassau” album.

11:19 AM – Called the furniture store, a manager will call me tomorrow to work out an exchange. All should be fine. Hubby is now awake and I’m making breakfast. My ex-coworker is now in school, taking a creative writing class. She has an assignment to write a 1,000-work story based on a painting. I thought that sounded interesting, and I agreed to try that myself. She is looking forward to reading what I come up with.

12:50 PM – Goodwill – We have this fireplace in our new apartment that we both know will never be used. I decided to turn it into some sort of art piece. Just now back from Goodwill, where I bought a bunch of dolls. I will place them in the fireplace like they were kindling. It’s looking nice and fun! Music on Pandora: Stereolab.

2:42 PM – Home – Hanging the last of the wall art in the new place. There’s just too much stuff; eventually found spaces for most of it without any of the walls seeming too full. The hubby has misplaced his jacket in the move. I want to look for it now; it’s too cold to go out in just a t-shirt! I felt bad for him when he left out earlier. The cat is loving the view from the back windows; squirrels are everywhere. Music on Pandora: My Bloody Valentine.

3:49 PM – Kitchen – Tonight’s chili is now on the stove. This is the perfect cold, grey day for it. After being out of work for a week to move, tomorrow is my first day back. Being in this one apartment for that long without seeing too many other people has been very good, in that it has allowed me to nest, which I think I needed. But it will be nice to go out and remind myself that I am a part of this town. The cat has been very needy today; he’s still getting used to the new surroundings. Music on Pandora: Lush.

6:15 to 10:20 PM – Home – Watching the Super Bowl. So glad New England lost. We started a Sling account, because we are both Olympics nerds, and are getting ready for the upcoming games in South Korea. Was a nice way to end my week or so away from work. The real world starts back at 9am tomorrow.

11:15 – Bedroom – The day is done. Goodnight!
