The main question we want you to address is: What do you think and feel about Muncie?

  1. How long have you lived here? If you were not born here, indicate where you came from and why.

I was born in Muncie, left at age 17, returned decades later and have lived and taught here (BSU) for just under 20 years.   My mother and two aunts were born here.  My maternal grandparents somehow found their way from Elis Island to The Middletown.

  1. Are you happy with where you live? Do you feel like you belong?

Yes, I am happy and do feel like I belong.

  1. Do you expect to stay here for long? What are or will be some of the considerations in deciding how long you stay here?

I leave when I die.  If Muncie hadn’t transformed it is doubtful I could have remained:

diverse, eclectic, culturally dynamic, testing progressive.  All such descriptors are meaningful for feeling home to a lightly colored, lesbian Jewess.

  1. How would you describe Muncie to someone who has never been here? What are its most distinctive characteristics?

For me, its most distinctive characteristic is the heathered impact of the American Indian.

  1. Do you think the ways other people think about Muncie are the same ways you think about it? How do you your thoughts and feelings about Muncie differ from its public image (from media or word-of-mouth around the state and beyond)?

No one thinks the way I do about Muncie.  For the past sixty years of my life, I’ve been –

off and on – writing about this little city:

Poetry

Six Plays for the Theater

Comic Monologues

Children’s Stories

A Musical (Collaboration)

My first five plays were produced at venues in Muncie with other local playwrights.

The musical was produced at CHS, Anderson’s Theatre & Indy’s Footlight Theatre.

Currently, I am sending the sixth and longest play to other playhouses in the country.  I

did at one time give the play to Civic but I do not think anyone there read it.  At this

time I’m working with R. to add music to the drama.

Perhaps The Middletown Center can give me a boost with having its first production at

the Civic.

Respectfully submitted,
